Overview of Boating Toys

New to the world of watersports? These activities vary in difficulty, but they generally involve holding onto a tow rope as you ride the wake generated by a fast boat. Tubing is the easiest place to start, and from there you can work up to waterskiing or wakeboarding. Let’s take a closer look at each of these options!

Water Tubing

Tubing simply refers to riding any type of inflatable that can be safely towed behind a boat. Anyone can enjoy tubing, as it does not require any special skill. All you need is an inflatable and a tow rope. Some tubes can even fit multiple people at once.

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding is a more advanced sport that relies on teamwork between the rider and the boat operator. In this activity, the rider is strapped to a board and hangs onto the tow rope as they cruise the wake. With practice, the wakeboarder can learn to perform tricks and jumps. If you would like to pursue this exciting sport, you will need a wakeboard and a special tow rope designed for wakeboarding.

Water Skiing

There are several approaches to waterskiing. The popular two-ski option is ideal for beginners and easy enough for children to master. Slalom skiing involves riding one ski, and this technique is best left to experienced riders. If you are looking for a next-level challenge, you can try barefoot skiing. In this version of the sport, riders skim the surface of the water with their bare feet! If you’re not ready for barefoot skiing, you will need one or two skis, along with a tow rope.

In addition to the specific toys for each sport, you should have plenty of safety essentials on your boat, including a first-aid kit and PFDs for the whole crew. Some wakeboarders and waterskiers also prefer to wear wetsuits.
